Just call me Karly Gilmore!

Let me preface by saying - I typically don't like to rant on my blog - but this calls for an exception!
I woke up this morning to a rather loud slushing sound. No matter how deep asleep I am - this ALWAYS wakes me up. I quickly rolled over to open my blinds to THISAND THIS
And it reminded me of a Gilmore Girls episode. You know Lorelai does have this love for snow - she can smell it coming. Well SO CAN I! I used to LOVE the snow. When I didn't have to drive, walk, or study in it. I used to love it sitting by the fireplace in Pine Valley or Brianhead - listening to Christmas music, sipping hot cocoa, and watching the snow fall. Now that was fun... but Provo snow is no bueno. Watch Lorelai and think of me this morning. I am trying to enjoy it while I take my online test and sip my peppermint herbal tea (Grandma Ora's cure all for upset tummy's - which I have from the SNOW and FINALS mixed together.)

In other good news Mary and I made a quilt over Christmas break. We were sad Katie couldn't do it with us - but it is almost complete. Now we just have to tie bows on those strips to make them look like presents! It sure was nice to snuggle with as I cried and watched the snow fall.

The Grinch or Santa?

How many times have I heard in my life - your Mom is SO talkative and your Dad is SO quiet. Too many to count! I would beg to differ. If you would just get to know my Dad you would see this hilarious side. The man is always cracking jokes behind my Mom's back. It is hilarious. For my whole life my Dad has pretendend to be Mr. Grinch - but deep down we ALL know he is just like Santa.

As any good college student would do I mailed Santa my letter this past week. Santa quickly replied...

Dear Karly,

I received in my express mail to the North Pole this evening your recent letter. I am replying to you through your father's email, because your parents are the ones that help me to know if you deserve to be on my good list this year. The main reason I am sending this through email to your parents is that I don't know how well you get your mail in a college apartment.

I need to remind you that you must be a good little girl all the way through December. I look forward to coming into your warm home on the upcoming wintery Christmas Eve. Please go to bed on time in case I am ahead of schedule that night. I don't like to wait around for the girls and boys to fall asleep. I have a lot of places to be in a short time.

I also understand that you will have your young nieces and nephew with you from Texas on that night. My elves made me aware that Harrison, Peyton, and Paige Sachse will be not be at their house in Plano, but in their grandparents house in St. George, Utah on my delivery night. I will adjust my schedule to make sure I have things packed in my sleigh accordingly.

Love,
Santa

It appears that Santa REALLY does know me.
And so now I ask you - do you believe in Santa?

Also - Note the: GO TO BED EARLY part. My Dad still dreams of going to bed on time - never going to happen in the Staples home.

First Journalism Story!

I am a little embarrassed to be posting this but oh well here it goes. I have been taking a News Writing class because it is a prerequisite for Broadcasting. The class is centered around Print Journalism. A few friends suggest I take the night class because the teacher was better. And it is true. Rich Evans is the news editor for the Daily Universe and I think a great teacher. I have been working on this story for a couple of weeks for my final project and he liked it so much he asked me if it would be ok if he published it. Of course I acted like it was no big deal and said, "I guess that will be alright." But inside I am totally ecstatic! My first REAL story that people actually see/read.

You can read it here or download the PDF so it actually looks like the Newspaper

Remember I am an amateur so it is nothing great! And it is on Page 9 which emphasizes that point. But hey its just one step in the right direction.

The Provo Night Life

Last night as I was laying in bed Suz came in and ripped me out. Since she NEVER comes to parties with me I agreed to come to hers. In the bottom of the Wells Fargo bank in Provo is this great "bar" called Spark. It has a chic fun style. Tuesday nights drinks are half off and it is jazz night. The best part about it is everything is alcohol free. If you are in Provo I highly recommend it! It has now become a Tuesday night ritual.
Brooke and Suz

Suz me and Jesse

The whole gang. Brooke, Suz, Me, Leigh, Jeff, and Jesse

I was chugging down my fancy shmancy water. Brooke is drinking a Shirley Temple with cotton candy, Suz is drinking an Ox Blood, me the fancy water, and Jesse some great flavored water thing.
Excited for our waters!
Jake with his apple Martini
Leigh, Helen, and Chase
I am so grateful for Suz. I wish you could all meet her. She makes everyone feel so fantastic about themselves. And she is fantastic inside and out herself. I was placed randomly with her and boy was it meant to be.

Welcome Christmas!

I hate being away from my home this time of year. I miss out on the Dickens festival and all of my Mom's fun decorating. So I try to make my small space full of Holiday Cheer.

My Mom gives me Christmas type books every year to collect for my future fam. I am going to read one every night to get me in the Christmas spirit.
