Life in the Making:: 27 Weeks

Hello 3rd Trimester.

Two things I am feeling at this very moment - extreme gratitude and a little fear.

I am now 27 weeks - 6 months pregnant.

Weeks 25-27 have been my biggest growth spurt yet.

Second trimester was literally a breeze.

No discomfort, no nausea.

I absolutely loved starting to feel her move and am starting to understand her little personality.

She already has a little sass to her

and will kick right at our fingers when we poke and prod her from outside.

She tends to kick the most on my upper left hand side.

I am loving having a "popped" belly

but starting to understand what it means to be "uncomfortable."

It seems like the pains are coming in waves.

Week 25 I had a really hard time sleeping.

During week 26 I had some very intense lower back pain for two or three days

followed by sore ribs.

I think that I must have just had 3 or 4 major growth days as things seem to be stabilizing now.

During the second trimester I definitely craved more salty foods.

I have now moved on to the sweets.

Poor girl already has a sweet tooth like her parents.

I am working on signing up for a birthing class.

And just started "Husband Coached Childbirth" today.

James is really trying to be interested in all my jabber about birthing.

I love that man.

Something about watching your belly grow almost over night gives you the real labor jitters.

The baby decisions seem to be piling up and I seem to be stalling.

Since my Mom

{and baby consultant}

is in another state I am having a real hard time biting the bullet on decisions.

And part of me relishes in learning about everything and taking my time.

I have picked out a stroller but still need to decide on a crib and car seat.

Car seat advice?

Is it ok to buy a crib on craigslist?

How do you paint a crib with safe paint?

Breast pumps - shouldn't there be a way to test those scary devices?

Bumpers - they are so cute, but apparently risky?

Oh my I have a lot to learn!

As I move into my third trimester I am continually reminded of how blessed I am to be here in this moment.

I know it's cliché, but we truly can't wait to meet our little bundle.

Governor

Had a nice dose of the news bug jitters last week.

I was able to interview the former Michigan Governor

and Meet the Press Contributor Jennifer Granholm

at the Irvine Business Outlook.

Let me tell you, she is one powerful yet graceful woman.

I felt out of my league and thrilled to have the opportunity.

Within a few moments we were off on a "breaking news story."

California's Governor Jerry Brown had come to town

to pitch his plan to save the state from its financial woes.

Before I could even think twice about my questions there I was -

packed in a room full of reporters from all of the major L.A. stations.

Intimidation at its finest.

Somehow I worked up enough gumption to ask my questions.

And in the blink of an eye it was all over.

Soon after I found myself sitting on my couch thinking

that as thrilling as my morning was nothing could beat the feeling of those little baby kicks.

Who knows, maybe she is getting the news jitters.

Living Colorfully

Last week I took a day trip to Pasadena with this lovely lady.

Suz grew up in the heart of the quaint Southern California town,

which made her the perfect tour guide.

I miss the unique feel of neighborhood streets

and Pasadena was just what the doctor ordered.

We made a stop at giggle,

a darling baby store,

before sitting down to a tasty lunch at the Green Street Cafe.

We wound up walking Colorado Blvd. - taking in the shops.

A stop at Lush is always a must.

And we found ourselves gushing over the kate spade store.

A girl can only dream of buying a pencil in that store

but it sure does provide some inspiration for living colorfully.

I can't get over this sign.

I don't know who it describes,

but don't you want to be her?

She sounds utterly fabulous and

equally as charming as the avenues in this well-known L.A. suburb.

Orange County Press Club

Thanks to the Churm Media VP of Digital Suzanne Broughton,

I now sit on the board of directors for the Orange County Press Club.

I am not sure how I was lucky enough to wind up in such excellent company.

I have a lot to learn from all of them.

The club consists of a wide range of "press people" from journalism veterans to local bloggers.

The members meet up several times a year at educational events, mixers and even awards.

Last week we met up for a mixer at Zov's Bistro.

Tasty food and excellent company.

Our next event is going to feature a panel of women in new media.

It is going to be incredible.

If you are a local blogger or journalist it is one you won't want to miss it.

A Birthday at Joe's Crab Shack...

To celebrate our dear friend Mercedes birthday

we headed to Joe's Crab Shack on the PCH for a real date night.

The restaurant sits right on the water and it was beautiful to look into the Newport harbor while we ate.

Only one {sleeping} babe was in attendance

and while we missed the kiddos we had a blast with our adult friends.

When Mercedes chose the restaurant she had no idea they made you dress up and dance on your big day.

Boy was she in for it.

Luckily, her sweet husband joined her in writing their names with their bums in front of the whole place.

She rocked that outfit!

I was dove right into the crab.

James on the other hand "doesn't like to fight for his food."

If only you could have seen his face as I dug out my food with pure joy.

I was more than happy with my choice and loved rocking that bib.

After our dinner a few of the couples headed back to our place for root beer floats and games.

One of my absolute favorite nights with this crew!

Boys will be Boys...

Last week I received a text from my nephew Michael

{who just happens to be 3 months younger than me}

saying to call him because he might be on his way to California.

In a thrilled frenzy I called him back.

Sure enough, he and his 2 college buddies needed out of cold Provo.

Within a few hours they had packed their bags and were headed south.

Doesn't it just sound like a fun, spontaneous, college thing to do?

I was beyond excited but doubted that they would actually make it all the way to our abode.

But Saturday morning at 6 a.m. I got a phone call.

Not only had they decided to come -

they were already here!

Like outside - on my door step.

Boys will be boys.

Michael and his roommates Jordan Adams {my close childhood friend} and James Fowler

had actually driven through the night to make it here.

Now the pressure was on to entertain!

First stop, Ruby's on the pier.

I can't believe I haven't blogged about this place yet.

It is simply a classic.

James absolutely loves their Oreo shakes.

And I must admit, they are pretty dang good.

Sit on top, order outside or dine in.

It is sure to please.

I knew it was the perfect place to take 4 hungry boys.

After Ruby's we took them to the Wedge so the boys could hang out on the beach

and toss the football.

James was in heaven with this much testosterone in the air.

Next up, a ferry ride to the island.

Did you hear that a mini-van actually went into the water from the ferry two weeks ago?

True story.

I am still shuttering in fear just thinking about it.

Luckily, we survived.

None of the boys had been to Balboa before so we moseyed around the streets.

This place will never loose its charm for me.

Michael opted for a very untraditional snow cone

while Jordan and James F. went for Dad's Original -

our favorite spot for the traditional frozen banana.

Luckily, Jordan's Dad had insisted he try the frozen banana.

Otherwise, I don't think I could have convinced them to try such a thing.

But of course they were a hit!

The day was finished with none other than...

Football!

I was absolutely thrilled to have these boys stay with us.

They headed to Huntington Beach and L.A. for the party life that night

and then headed home pretty early the next day.

I am begging them to come back for the next 3 day weekend.

I am promising them dates and yummy food.

What else could a college boy need?

Goodbye Williams Family...

Awhile back we had a little dessert party for the Williams family.

They are some of our first and best friends in California.

Sadly, they are packing their bags and heading to Colorado for a few years.

But we decided to have one last shabang with a few of the families at our place.

Everyone brought a dessert and it was one delicious evening.

I finally made my Mom's famous lemon bars and loved every bite.

At one point I think we had 10 munchkins in our 2 bedroom apartment -

such a party!

We loved every minute.

James was in heaven chasing them all around.

Especially when they all piled in our little boat,

which was quickly transformed into a quasi teeter totter.

Nothing beats the creativity of kids.

Sure going to miss the Williams family

but we have a feeling they won't be able to stay away for too long.

Great Mex

New Years eve and day were pretty uneventful at our house.

We had quite the horrific travel experience on our way home from Hawaii

{I will spare you the details}

and we were completely pooped.

Luckily, James' office was closed on Monday and we had an extra day to lounge around.

The weather was incredible, so we got together with several friends to enjoy the peninsula.

We have heard about Great Mex for months.

It is a real hit among the long timers but we just couldn't convince our newbie selves to give it a try.

{Sad, but true}

We finally braved the little hole in the wall and boy are we glad.

There is nothing better than just good ol' real Mexican food.

I am still craving the black bean tacos doused in salsa like you wouldn't believe.

Afterwards we enjoyed the sun with friends.

And even though the sting of the post-vacation work week was upon us,

I was thrilled to be home with my main squeeze.

Life in the Making: 24 Weeks

The baby bump is really making its debut.

Everyone told me it would just pop out one day.

But I feel like every day it pops out more.

When James got home last night he could hardly believe it.

He asked me what it feels like to be pregnant.

And I laughed thinking how could I possibly describe what it feels like to watch your belly turn into a ball.

It is magical.

I had my monthly doctors appointment this week.

Everything came out perfect and I am measuring 24 centimeters - right where I should be.

I was finally smart enough to write down my questions before hand and it was very helpful.

My Mom and sister both did the Bradley classes.

While I like the natural ideas -

I was nervous about the local teachers and their particular methods.

I am also skeptical of myself and my pain tolerance.

{honesty at its finest}

My doctor respectively advised me against these classes

and recommended I take the birthing classes at Hoag Hospital instead.

I agreed with his points and after talking with James, we have decided to go that route instead.

I think I will buy the Bradley book and read it on my own.

We want to be realistic about epidural vs. natural birth for our first.

I am learning there is so much more to birthing and methods than just pain meds.

And I am loving reading other peoples birth experiences.

Each one is so different and unique to Mom, Dad and babe.

These sorts of parenting decisions are already consuming my thoughts.

No real cravings - except that I want sugar more this week than I have in the past.

Sweets sound good again.

Oh dear.

I am definitely more hungry as time goes on.

I still can't eat big meals but want to snack all day.

Every night I fall asleep on my left side - trying to obey that rule.

But I find myself waking up every.single.night. around 1 or 2.

I think its a combination of my wild and crazy pregnancy dreams, growing pains and having to go to the bathroom.

For the most part I still feel like a million bucks.

But after 2 months of a nausea hiatus - I threw up several times on Wednesday.

I have also felt incredibly tired again this week.

And have started to feel some serious "growing pains" in my belly at the end of the day.

But I will take the pains to watch my belly grow.

She is moving like crazy.

The movements have now gone from little flutters - to jolts.

I can actually see my stomach move with her.

James commented that now its like she is doing flips or swimming -

no more twitching.

I have even found myself wondering if she is going to be a super active baby

because I swear all this movement isn't normal.

Last night she responded to pokes and prods for the first time.

Hoping it wasn't just a fluke.

I simply adore her movements already.

She has gained 4 ounces in the last week.

And will gain 6 more this week.

She is more than 9 inches long.

I promised myself that I wouldn't get into nesting and baby buying until the start of the year.

Now the time is here and I am so excited to get going.

Thank you to pinterest I have started to compile some nursery ideas.

But I am still in need of baby product suggestions -

strollers, carriers, cribs, bumpers (to have or not to have), diaper genie, baby monitors, car seats etc.

What are your recommendations?

Hawaii Part III

We spent the remainder of our trip lounging around the resort,

visiting the new Disney hotel,

drinking lots of Diet Coke on the beach,

{not really my thing but definitely a Barker fam fav.}

paddle boarding

and going sailing/snorkeling.

I have an obsession for boats that is probably not healthy.

It all started at Lake Powell and is now moving to the ocean.

I sat on the bow like a little kid and took every minute in.

The sea is just magical to me.

As if it couldn't get any better -

nearly a dozen dolphins began swimming along the side.

Pinch me.

I was devastated that I didn't have my camera handy -

but thrilled I got to take it all in.

We wrapped up our vacation at Pearl Harbor.

Although we had little time to enjoy the sites,

I was actually really happy that we decided to finish the vacation at such a remarkable place.

It was humbling to think of that dreadful day and how very blessed we are to have our freedoms.

I must thank the Barker's for this incredible trip.

We are oh so spoiled and know how much this trip meant to you.

For us, it was an absolute joy.

No, we did not have to go to Hawaii to enjoy family time.

We enjoy your company wherever we are.

But boy-oh-boy was it a blast.

As for Hawaii, we hope to be lucky enough to visit your shores again.

Which is why it is only fitting to say, with an oomph of hope and a bit of doubt, goodbye and hello.

Aloha Winds

On Monday we woke up to some pretty fierce wind.

This was not on our agenda.

Didn't mother nature know we were in town?

But as my adorable m.i.l. put it -

we were not going to let a little wind ruin our vaca.

And it actually turned out to be one of my favorite days of the trip.

Half of the crew took the "quick route" to the north shore

to hit up the Polynesian Cultural Center and a round of golf.

My sister-in-law Katie served a mission at the PCC and Temple Visitors Center.

Can you imagine a better mission?

The other half of us took our time - winding around the eastern shore of the island.

It took us 3 hours to get to the LDS Temple from Ko Olina.

But we didn't mind.

We wound up through some of the most incredible roads and saw some stunning beaches.

We got out at several places to check out the beautiful turquoise waters.

We found a little coconut shack and Ann was so excited to get one.

For some reason we were all expecting this little guy to be filled with a sweet pina colada drink.

Wrong-o!

Lesson #1 in Hawaii life.

Coconut water is not good.

We laughed about it for a good hour.

We met up with the rest of the crew at the Temple and temple beach.

Isn't it stunning?

Still can't believe we were there.

Lucky, lucky are we.

I can't get over how rural the northern part of the island is.

Now that is the real beach life.

Then it was off to the PCC where we saw the fire show -

Ha: Breath of Life.

Loved.every.second.

Sure, its the touristy thing to do.

But it's definitely something you need to see at least once.

I was thrilled we were able to go.

We piled in the car and headed back home.

It was the first time I have taken any sort of "road trip" with the Barkers.

And it made me feel right at home.

Mom nodding off in the front seat, kids piled in the back, jamming out at first -

then poking and prodding at each other

and then zonked by the end.

One successful family outing.

A Destination Christmas...

2011 marked my first Barker family Christmas.

And as you can see -

the Barkers sure do know how to convince a girl that they know how to celebrate.

{as if I needed any convincing}

It was an incredible Christmas.

How did I get so lucky to wind up with James AND his fab fam?

We touched down in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 23rd.

We stayed in a newer area of Oahu called Ko Olina.

The area has three major resorts, which surround several large ocean lagoons.

No crashing waves - just a nice tide to listen to.

It was nothing short of spectacular.

It was a slightly rainy day - but we didn't mind.

We headed straight for the pools to enjoy the last few hours of daylight.

The next day was Christmas eve.

We went to the grocery store to get a few things and started prepping ourselves for the holiday ahead.

And of course, we all indulged in our darling new nephew.

James and his dad hit the links while the girls lounged by the pool.

A few short hours later we walked down the gorgeous path between the resorts for a Christmas Eve buffet.

We talked about family traditions, told stories, spoke of our blessings and reminisced.

The sun setting on our walk home was incredible.

I must admit -

I love that I married a man with all sisters.

They have become some of my very best friends.

I could have walked and talked with them on that path for hours.

We returned to the hotel and lined up our stockings for Santa

before participating in a little Christmas program.

My mother-in-law Ann made this chime set for a Relief Society activity several years ago.

I was so excited to get to participate in the new tradition of chime playing.

Jim was our director.

We followed the numbered music to some of our very favorite hymns.

I will admit, we could use a little bit of practice

but after awhile we got it down.

It is a new tradition that I hope to carry on in our very own little Barker home.

Ann even went so far as to bring us Christmas pajamas all the way to Hawaii.

I was beyond thrilled -

I couldn't imagine a Christmas without them.

{That is James' shirt.

Yes, it reads "everything is better with Coke."

The ironic part is that I don't really drink Coke. Only on occasion.

Guess I was trying to win points with the Barker fam?}

The next day was Christmas.

Naturally I woke up around 5 a.m.

Santa just has that effect on me -

no matter where I am.

I waited for an hour or so before waking up James.

I loved getting to see pictures on Intagram that morning.

It is so fun to get a glimpse of your traditions - almost instantly.

Once I jumped on the bed several hundred times -

James was up.

We rushed down to the sand in our Christmas pajamas and submerged our toes.

It was calm and beautiful.

We were the only ones in sight.

It was a morning I don't think I will ever forget.

Not only was I able to spend the first few moments with my husband -

but our baby girl decided to really make a big entrance.

For the first time -

you could really tell I was pregnant.

Perhaps it was slipping into a bathing suit or all the Christmas food.

But Christmas eve and Christmas day she was ready to pop right out.

And so we sat - just taking it all in.

Feeling overwhelmed with gratitude for our Savior and our family.

We are blessed.

The perfect start to the Christmas day.

We rushed back up stairs to find that everyone was awake and ready to get going.

The sun was shining and Santa had stuffed our stockings to the brim.

Lucky us.

Chocolate covered macadamia nuts and a hand sewn punting banner adorned those long socks.

We all gave the parents some gifts and exchanged a few things.

We kept it simple and sweet.

Ate our tasty Christmas breakfast.

{Complete with Hawaiian pineapple - INCREDIBLE}

And dashed down to the beach for the day.

{Note the bump - 5 months prego}

We snorkeled around one of the lagoons with the girls.

Ann rented a water hammock and all our cares seemed 5 million years away.

For Christmas dinner - we cooked in our hotel!

I wish I would have taken pictures.

We promised Jim we would cook so that Ann wouldn't have to stress.

It was a crack up.

We grilled steak, made a tasty salad and baked potatoes.

We could not get the potatoes to cook.

Isn't that supposed to be the easiest thing to cook?

After nearly 2 hours.

They were ready and we dove in to our fun Christmas feast.

On our way to the beach Allison and Lizzie decided to climb a palm tree.

James and I were cracking up.

They were so scared.

We were going to show them.

It looked like a joke.

Up we went - and I could not even get myself to stand up straight.

It was terrifying.

Pathetic I tell you.

2011 Barker Family Year in Review

One of my favorite things to do at the start of a New Year is reflect on the "old year."

Review our many, many blessings and look for ways we can improve our lives.

Here is the first edition of the "Barker Family Year in Review"

Rang in the New Year with a cozy snuggled in getaway and snow shoeing in Brianhead.

Allison came to visit for MLK Day.

Celebrated our first Valentines Day as a married couple with two romantic evenings.

Enjoyed a Vegas vacation for Kourtney and Matt Harrison's wedding.

Made some incredible lifelong friends while living at the "Roylance Estates" across from the Provo cemetery. (see here too)

James turned the big 25 (see here, here and here) and studied hits guts out for the CPA exams.

Karly wrapped up her last semester while hosting BYU Weekly.

Graduated in April (here and here) and celebrated Easter with both the Staples and Barkers.

Went apartment hunting in California and said goodbye to Utah and hello to California a few weeks later.

I found the perfect job at OC Metro and James started his accounting career.

Went to Arizona to welcome my nephew home from his mission and again for Michael Choules wedding.

Thoroughly enjoyed our first SoCal Summer...

as did the many visitors at Hotel Barker.

Had a reunion with the Lanai crew at Ronnie's wedding in Temecula.

Ate frozen banana's on the island more times than we are willing to admit.

Made many, many new California friends and had a blast getting to know them better.

Celebrated our first anniversary with a weekend in San Diego and Coronado.

Welcomed a new nephew, and the first Barker grandchild, Baby Carter.

Had the biggest blessing of all, found out we are expecting our first baby, a girl, due in the Spring of 2012.

My parents came to visit.

Hosted a Halloween bash to remember.

Had the first of many college friend reunions.

Celebrated Thanksgiving with the Staples family, complete with Henry's first birthday.

And had our first Christmas with the Barkers - in Hawaii!

We have had a lot of changes around our home this year and abundance of blessings.

In some ways we know exactly where 2012 will take us.

In others, we aren't so sure.

But we do know one thing -

we are incredibly blessed and excited for our family's future.

A Christmas Night Out...

When James and I were engaged I vividly remember sitting on my family room floor

half laughing/half whining with the women in my family.

My Mom, sisters and I were commenting on how men just don't get hints.

My incredibly wise and graceful grandmother sat in the corner laughing a little

and then said, "Let me tell you a little story about Grandpa."

I leaned in thinking she was about to share how my Grandpa "just knew."

Surely men could read minds in the olden days.

She told us of an anniversary many years ago.

Grandpa was downstairs watching basketball.

She made him and the boys dinner -

thinking he would immediately jump up and run to her romantic aide.

He did not.

She packed up her dinner and went to the beach - alone.

She sat in the car and shed a few tears.

Surely Grandpa would realize she was gone, realize it was their anniversary

and of course - come rushing in on his white horse.

He did not.

Grandma returned awhile later to find that Grandpa remained downstairs cheering on his team.

Not the story I expected to hear.

Grandma then explained that the only miserable person that night was herself.

Grandpa of course made up for his mistake later.

But had she gently told him what she had wanted on their anniversary

she would have saved herself a night of misery.

At the time -

I thought she was nuts.

James needed to remember to be romantic without me reminding him.

I was putting my foot down.

Now, I look back and laugh.

Oh how right Grandma was.

Rather than yearning for James to just magically know that I wanted a night out on the town...

I just told him.

I wanted to make his company party and our last Saturday before the holiday a night to remember.

Thrilled that I communicated my desires, James jumped at the opportunity.

We started our night with appetizers at Mama D's on the Balboa Peninsula.

It is a local favorite.

Then it was off to Fashion Island to see the hustle and bustle

and to indulge in the new Vineyard Vines store.

Then, we got all gussied up for his company party.

It was at a fancy yacht club in Irvine.

I was able to meet some of his co-workers

and hang out with one of our favorite friends Joe.

He is an associate with James and I am fairly certain that these two are the jokesters of the firm.

We enjoyed the photo booth and some tasty dinner to boot.

Then, it was off to enjoy some Christmas lights just the two of us while listening to a little Michael Buble.

As simple as it was, it was just what I needed.

And by the end of the night -

I had totally forgotten that I placed the teeny tiny idea in his head.

A win-win for us both.

Feelin' Christmas-Sea

Despite my fears that Newport Beach could not possibly feel Christmasy -

I am having a holly jolly time this holiday season.

Last weekend was the 103rd Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade.

I have been looking forward to it since the 4th of July Parade.

This years theme was "Feelin' Christmas-Sea in Newport Beach."

I have never seen anything like it.

It is hailed as one of "the top ten holiday happenings in the nation" by the New York Times.

And lucky us - it happens just down the street.

Who needs a white Christmas?

The parade runs for 5 days and the harbor was packed.

We went on Friday - but by Saturday Balboa Island was literally over flowing with cars.

There simply wasn't enough room.

Our bishop hosted an open house at his home on Lido Island.

We were able to indulge in some holiday cheer at his family's home

and then walk to the pier to watch the boats go by.

It is times like these that I feel so blessed to be a member of the LDS faith.

Being away from my family during the holidays can be hard.

I have spent many hours worrying about

how I would feel my first Christmas away from the Staples family tree

and neighborhood Christmas program.

But snuggling in next to the fireplace at my bishops house made me feel like I was home for the holidays.

I am so sad I didn't snap a picture of me and James.

I even wore a beanie and coat.

It was a "chilly" 50 degrees at night and although the air wasn't crisp

my attire made it feel like winter.

As we sipped hot cider on the pier I whispered to James that

no matter where we live we will find our family traditions.

This was something new for both of us but it felt like a Christmas tradition nonetheless.

And although we have no idea where we will be long term -

this is something I could see myself attending year-after-year.

It made me feel absolutely "Christmas-Sea!"

21 Weeks...

We are just cruising along.

I can't believe how fast the time is flying.

My belly seems to be popping out more and more with every day.

James noted that my belly button is already getting more shallow -

and it's true.

I notice a road map of veins all over my entire torso.

Surely this means my skin is stretching.

I bought myself some loose fitting shirts/dresses this week.

I tried on a pair of maternity jeans and just couldn't do it.

For now, I am sticking with the rubber band around the button.

Maybe next time?

James thinks I am more hungry -

but I haven't noticed any dying need to eat ice cream or cookies etc.

In fact, I think my cravings for sugar have gone down.

I just seem to eat a little more in general.

Trying to work out more and more.

I finally got back to spinning this week and felt like a million bucks after.
She was moving like crazy an hour later.

I need to go more often.

I feel that I am going to start gaining weight fast and want to manage it.

I have little braxton hicks contractions on occasion.

I find them fascinating and don't mind them too much.

I am still feeling my pulse in my belly.

I wonder if it will last the entire pregnancy?

I am a little worried that after Christmas is over time is going to crawl.

January - April always seems slow as it is.

I can't imagine waiting to meet our little girl.

I haven't started on much of anything for that reason.

Hoping to keep myself busy during those months.

She is still a movin' and a shakin' inside.

James finally felt her move this week.

He loves it and says that I am "hogging her" all day because I get to feel it.

I sure hope she continues moving this much.

I can't get enough.

Gingerbread...

It's simply not Christmas without gingerbread houses.

James and I had a few friends over last weekend to "deck the halls" of these tasty treats.

We kept it real simple - just the way we like it.

We had some tasty appetizers, turned on Michael Buble Christmas

and got right to work.

As you can see - the girls got busy making our houses

and the boys took care of the kiddos.

In order to avoid the sweets, cream and cheese of the season I made some pesto bruschetta.

Don't let me fool you - this came out of a bottle from Trader Joes.

It is now one of my favorite appetizers.

I could eat the tomato sauce with a spoon.

By the end of the night everyone was pooped.

I loved having people crash under my tree.

There is nothing like your home during the holidays.

Tis the season!

Baby's First Pictures...

We decided to have an early ultrasound to tell our family the gender over Thanksgiving.

To be honest, I knew our little one was a girl from the beginning.

Call it a good guess -

but I think it was mothers intuition.

My Mom knew with all of us and so far I am off to a great start.

But James - well, he was not so convinced.

I kept trying to make him guess.

He wouldn't

A few days before our appointment we stopped at South Coast Plaza to browse the baby clothes.

Mr. Barker fell in love with a baby pair of Air Jordan's.

Suddenly he thought/wanted it to be a boy.

Finally - I had my guess and he had his - and it was on!

As we sat in the ultrasound room this little girls was not going to budge.

She just wasn't.

Legs crossed and the whole bit.

Just as he does when he watches football,

James stood just inches from the TV watching our little one move.

Although he didn't say it at the time he said that he was thinking,

"Come on little guy!"

After a few minutes the ultrasound tech had me get up and do jumping jacks.

It was the first real moment that I realized every little move I make effects this new life.

James realized it too.

At the exact same moment we both recognized that

our lives are now intimately connected to another little person.

When I sat back down - the ultrasound tech knew.

It is a girl.

Two weeks later we had our real ultrasound at my doctor's office.

It was at that appointment that we got these pictures.

I haven't stopped looking at them since.

To most people ultrasound pictures look like aliens.

I know, because I thought the same thing until I had my own.

Now, I am slightly obsessed.

One of the first things James said to me when I got pregnant was,

"Yes! Now you will have someone else to take pictures of besides me."

He abhors taking pictures.

Well, looks like we are off to a great start with our little girl.

Ugly Sweater Party...

Our darling friends, the Williams, held an "ugly sweater" Christmas party last weekend.

Of course I was thrilled with the holiday festivity!

Unfortunately, the thrift stores here were flat out of ugly sweaters.

So, I had to get creative.

James had thrown out his real ugly sweater after I made him wear it on Christmas Eve last year.

{Pretty sure it was his protection against being forced to wear it again in the future}

He opted for a green sweater with a scarf at the last minute.

But that was just not going to do the trick for me.

So I found this beauty at Target.

And I must admit...

I am hooked.

It is so cozy!

James says it will be the perfect ensemble for when I am breast feeding.

But I think after a few days of him coming home to me looking like this he would beg to differ.

After a few moments of watching me snuggle up by the tree wearing this giddy-up

James was terribly sad he wouldn't let me buy him a pair!

I made a big splurge for this party.

I must admit - I am craving cheese!

I just needed my Mom's brie cheese with caramel.

It wasn't a want.

It was a need.

Need the recipe?

2 triangles of brie cheese

{pasteurized if you are pregnant of course}

1/2 bottle of Caramel Syrup.

Place the brie in the oven.

Cook until melty.

{About 10 minutes}

Pour on the caramel.

Cook for another minute or two.

Cut up bread or open crackers for dipping.

And viola!

Holiday goodness.

My advice: take it to a party so that you don't eat a good portion of it.

This stuff is so tasty.

Your mouth will thank me.

Sadly I didn't get a picture of everyone at the party.

It was a perfect evening to help kick off our holiday season.

20 Weeks...

Half way!

Where has the time gone?

My belly has really started to pop this week.

I feel like it grows more and more every day and I love it.

I felt her move for the first time this week and can't get enough of the little flutter!

I never want her to stop but for now the kicking is very sporadic.

For some reason it shocks me every time.

I still can't believe there is a little munchkin growing in there.

But it makes me feel more connected to her with every passing day.

I hate that James can't feel it yet.

He constantly has is hand on my belly trying to feel her movement.

Hopefully soon!

Yesterday I used my first rubber band on my jeans.

I have a feeling it's going to be that and the belly band for the next little bit...

Then on to the maternity jeans.

We got a darling pair of Sperry's from my friend Suz on Monday.

I think it made James really excited to have a little girl.

He put them on his chest and just stared.

Pretty sure this little girl already has her daddy wrapped around her finger.

My hair is getting darker.

At every major change in my life my Mom swore my hair would turn a light brown.

But I think pregnancy might do the trick.

My hairstylist told me to hold out before I start highlighting it.

It's winter AND I am pregnant.

Maybe I will be a brunette soon?

Maybe I will just let it stay dark?

Is this a normal thing?

No major cravings this week.

But I have eaten a lot of fresh artichokes which is strange.

I find myself munching all day and not wanting big meals.

My dreams have progressively gotten more weird and vivid.

This is a Staples girl curse during pregnancy so its to be expected.

This week the baby is about 6.5 inches head to rump and 10 inches total.

She is approaching the 1 pound mark here in the next week.

She is approximately the size of a cantaloupe.

We have one name that we are pretty set on

but I am not quite ready to share it with everyone.

I worry that I may become indecisive.

But for now we feel like it fits her very well.

We will just have to wait and see!

I am already so in love with our little one.

I can only imagine how my obsession is going to grow.

I am trying not to take one day of this whole experience for granted.

Loving every minute.

Henry's Fiesta!

Since my nephew's first birthday was right after Thanksgiving we decided to have a little fiesta!

We kept it pretty simple but had a blast with family and friends.

Thanks to both sets of Adams for helping us out!

Katie and Scott made this incredible cake for Henry since he is allergic to dairy.

Not sure if he was too into it - but we sure were!

Thanksgiving 2011 + It's a GIRL!

Our friends left on Monday,

so James and I had a few days in STG with my parents and my nephew Michael!

Even though I haven't lived in that home or that town for almost 6 years -

it still feels like bliss to wake up to this place.

James is even falling in love with it!

He loves main street and could spend hours paroozing maps

and learning the lay of the land.

I am not complaining.

We went to the Jubilee of Trees.

Spent time with my sweet Grandma.

Drank a Bubble Tea.

Saw baby Lexie.

Hung out with Wess and Melissa.

Stopped at Swig.

Visited Pasta Factory more times than I am willing to admit.

And ate at Twenty Five Main with some wonderful friends from high school.

It was just what this {slightly} homesick girl needed.

It was also nice to be able to spend a little extra time with my nephew Michael -

who is my same age.

We grew up like twins and I sure do love that boy!

By Wednesday night my sister Katie and her sweet family from Colorado had landed

and first thing Thursday morning my sister Patrice and her family from Arizona arrived ready for the party.

We were desperately missing our other four siblings who are scattered across the country -

but we were grateful to have three of us {and our families} together.

Thursday morning James played football with a bunch of guys that I grew up with.

My husband, who grew up on the other side of the country,

somehow managed to play sports with friends every day while we were there.

I loved being able to go watch and see some of the guys at Dixie Middle and Dixie High.

Felt like home.

Then it was back to the house for a full day of cooking and family time.

My 10-year-old niece is turning into quite the movie director.

So of course she dressed us all up for her movie about our Thanksgiving.

These were my two favorite costumes.

{surely my Dad and husband are going to kill me for this}

We don't know where Beth got her sense of humor and creativity

but we sure are glad to have her around.

And glad she has her big sister Kate at home to star in all of her films.

Right Kate?

We spent most of the day admiring my nieces and nephews.

Michael, Kate and Beth feel like siblings.

I adore all three of them more than words can say.

And well, these pictures speak for themselves with Henry.

We are all simply enamored with this little guy.

{Now if only I could get the Michael, Kate or Beth to let me hold them like that.}

Just in case you were wondering -

my vegan parents did cook a turkey for the crew.

Pictured above is my brother-in-law Chris.

He is cutting what my Mom called

"a happy turkey."

Apparently it was some free range bird that grew up locally.

What can we say - it made us all feel a little bit better.

It was a hysterical Thanksgiving.

We basically had two of every dish.

My parents are "plant based" eaters.

A few of us are trying to eat less meat and more veggies.

Some of the fam still loves their butter and Oreos.

And Katie has to eat dairy free for her nursing babe.

So, we had quite the wide variety of pallets to say the least.

But somehow we managed to make a meal for every one.

{It's a good thing or my husband may have uprooted for dinner}

And after hours and hours in the kitchen -

we finally dug in!

As dinner was winding down James and I brought in a little gift for the fam.

On a whim, we decided to go in for an early ultrasound a few days before leaving for Thanksgiving.

We weren't supposed to find out until the Tuesday after the holiday.

The entire week we were taking bets.

No one had any clue we already knew.

I brought in a giant box -

my Dad opened it

and viola!

It's a girl!

As you can see, my Mom's reaction was absolutely priceless.

Thrilled.

Rewind just a few hours...

and travel thousands of miles away...

and you would find the Barker fam enjoying their Thanksgiving.

While James and I were loving Thanksgiving in the Staples home,

we wished we could have been in two places at once.

Its funny - even though I have only been a member of the Barker fam for a little over a year

I desperately miss them on the holidays.

I definitely lucked out becoming a Barker.

My sweet sisters-in-law Allison and Lizzie helped us with a little gift for Jim and Ann.

"A special delivery" from James and Karly revealed two pink balloons.

It's a girl!

Apparently there was some confusion -

are there two girls?

{It's a natural question since James is a twin.}

But once they got over the confusion and laughter they were thrilled with the news.

Baby girl Barker is only the second grandchild - and the first girl.

Needless to say, I think this little girl is going to be spoiled rotten by her aunties and grandparents.

Oh how we wish we could have seen their faces.

Something about this Thanksgiving was absolutely magical.

For the most part we all just curled up on the couch at my parents and spent time together.

It wasn't extravagant.

Just simple.

And it was perhaps one of my favorite Thanksgivings of all time.

Nothing beats time with family on the holidays.

Christmas at Fashion Island...

met up at Fashion Island for lunch last week.

Nothing says Christmas like a giant fir next to palm trees, right?

You should have seen us -

three strollers and five kids.

We were a site to see walking around the ritzy mall.

I was lucky enough to snap a few pictures of some of the babes and Santa.

I am counting down the days till I can get James to go sit on his lap.

{You better bet it will happen!}

Am I lucky to have met these girls or what?

Sure am loving the most wonderful time of year in the 60 degree weather!

19 weeks...

I can't believe I am almost half way there!

I must admit - I am absolutely loving being pregnant.

James is thrilled that I am pregnant and loves the process -

which makes it that much better!

It is incredible to watch my belly grow and know there is a little girl growing rapidly inside.

I want to start documenting weekly from now on so that I can track the growth more carefully.

This is a month long update so brace yourself.

I had a big doctors appointment this week.

My blood tests all look good but I need to get my iron tested again.

Still feeling anemic.

It took the doctor awhile to find her heart beat.

James wasn't at the office yet and it terrified me.

But once I heard it - all was well in the world.

That little sound is so special.

We had our body scan ultrasound this week.

James and I both agree that having a good ultrasound tech is just as important as a good doctor.

Our tech explained everything she was looking for and the problems she was ruling out.

She said little baby barker looks perfectly healthy.

She is still right on track for the April 27th due date.

But she is weighing 9 ounces - 2 ounces above the average weight.

She is about six inches long.

I can't tell if I am feeling her kick of not.

Sometimes I think I am just making it up in my head.

The ultrasound tech said it may be a few weeks because of the placement of my placenta.

The baby bump hasn't quite popped

unless I wear an already prego looking shirt.

James and I can definitely tell I am pregnant.

But it still hides in most clothing.

However, certain parts of my body seem to be growing rapidly.

{If you know what I mean.}

And I have had two friends notice a little bit of a bump.

It seems as if my belly grew 3 inches while we were in St. George for Thanksgiving.

Not sure if it is a holiday food belly or a baby belly.

I have become rather obsessed with looking at pictures of other people's baby bumps.

Call me crazy - but I love to see how everyone's bump grows at different speeds etc.

I love learning about pregnancy through Facebook, blogs etc.

It has been a huge help!

Thank you to everyone who posts them.

I am still wearing my normal clothes.

Most still fit fine but some are getting quite snug.

I need to start buying some maternity clothes but have been avoiding the subject.

How do you shop for maternity clothes? Tips?

My Mom gave me a belly band.

I will probably have to start using it in the next week or two with some pants.

I have been having sharp pains in my lower stomach.

It typically happens when I am bending over or standing up.

The doctor said this is completely normal and to expect them to continue.

For the most part I feel normal.

The day my first trimester ended it was like a switch was flipped.

Although the last two days I have felt a little mid-day nausea.

It could be related to my lack of sleep.

For some reason I am having trouble sleeping this week.

But I doubt it has to do with pregnancy at this point.

I haven't felt terribly moody -

until two nights ago.

Poor, poor James.

I don't know what happened but those pregnancy hormones were not good.

I am so lucky to have the most patient and forgiving husband.

I was up and down and rude and all over the place!

Hoping that I remain myself and don't turn into a crazy person.

Love that husband of mine.

The cravings aren't quite as strong as I expected them to be.

But I have been wanting salt on everything.

Although that isn't really anything new for me.

I did eat a whole jar of cornichon pickles while I was in St. George

and have been eating corn on the cob like crazy this week.

For the most part I still want healthy foods i.e. strawberries and baby tomatoes.

I am trying to eat as healthy as possible and really need to start working out more!

But I did splurge a lot over Thanksgiving.

I have been terrible at taking my vitamins!

My doctor said its not a big deal at all.

They make me sick - but I know that I need to get them down.

We are trying to prepare for the little munchies debut by reading a few books.

I am reading what my Mom refers to as "the baby bible"

aka What to Expect When you are Expecting.

And my darling sister-in-law Katie's recommendation we are reading

Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child together.

I need to read more and more as time goes on.

I am looking into birthing classes.

Any suggestions?

We are also really trying to prepare spiritually.

We feel so blessed to be in the position that we are right now.

I cannot believe we are going to be trusted with the development of another spirit.

It is something that I feel is both magical and terrifying.

But mostly magical.

We cannot wait for the divine role of parenthood.

I am slowly turning our beach apartment into our very own Whoville.

Hopefully this year will go a little more smoothly than last year.

So far, we are off to a great start.

Pre-Thanksgiving Escape...

James and I decided to take a little vacation before Thanksgiving.

We took three days off - leaving us with a 10 day vacation.

It was nothing short of fabulous!

We were lucky enough to meet up with several couple friends from our alma mater - BYU.

St. George was the perfect meeting place for all of us

as we traveled to our various Thanksgiving destinations.

Daron and Dani Bree Young - Blair and Nicole Frei - Ryan and Shelby Skousen

and the Barkers were all {miraculously}in STG for the same 48 hours.

Glorious!

My Dad called our little get together an "adult sleepover."

We had a good laugh about that one.

We all {appropriately} crashed at my parents' house.

{Thank you Mom and Dad}

Saturday we enjoyed the stunning weather by going on a little hike.

Even though I grew up in St. George -

I never managed to hike "fat man's misery"

on top of the sugar loaf.

And I decided this was going to be the day.

I titled it "pregnant woman's misery" as I squeezed myself through that terrifying crack.

We convinced Shelby to face her claustrophobic fears

and once she climbed through

she announced that it was one of the best things she has ever done.

Sadly, the boys were not able to fit -

but they did make some excellent photographers!

Something about the Dixie Rock is just magical to me.

Call me crazy,

but I get the goosebumps thinking about the rich century long traditions of this hill.

I was lucky enough to go to Dixie High and feel the magic of this place.

Few places allow kids to relay a bucket up main street or hang off a cliff to paint their pride on a rock.

We spent hours and hours catching up.

I think I could talk to these girls for years about life, the gospel and love.

The boys watched football and played ping-pong.

That night we ate at Pasta Factory.

After 4.5 months of pregnancy cravings for their marinara and bread sticks -

I finally had my fix.

Even though we hadn't told our families

we couldn't miss this opportunity to tell a big group about our baby girl.

As we sat down our server brought a round of PINK lemonade.

Everyone kept looking around and then suddenly Nicole got it and screamed "It's a girl!"

It was so classic and was thrilling to finally have the word out.

After dinner James convinced the crew to go to Nielson's Frozen Custard.

He is slightly obsessed.

It was the perfect start to our vacation.

I was terribly sad to see everyone go but feel oh so blessed to have them all as life long friends.

This group of people are constantly keeping in touch and are always wanting to get together.

They are the kind of friends you want to keep around for a long, long time.

When I came across OC Metro I had no idea the opportunity I was walking into.

I was told Orange County was the worst place for a broadcasting job.

I would need to commute.

I refused to believe it and to leave my sweet husband for a job elsewhere.

So, I looked for alternatives.

And it turns out I didn't find an alternative -

I found the best job I could imagine.

Not just because it was in journalism -

because of the people.

Earlier this month we had our Hot 25 event.

OC Metro recognizes the "hottest" 25 people in Orange County.

No, not for their looks.

For their outstanding contributions to the local business industry.

People like the president of Disneyland Resort or the CEO of Yogurtland.

I was lucky enough to attend the event and to interview the honoree's.

Talk about nerve racking.

I introduced our CEO Steve Churm in a live shot on the OC Metro Minute.

It was exhilarating and a huge honor.

The event was planned by OC Metro's sister company Ripe Orange and went off without a hitch.

Besides me tripping in front of the whole audience

but what else is new?

It was held at the Island Hotel and as you can see the food was to die for.

I think I ate three servings of their specialty Macaroni and Cheese.

Don't judge. I was nervous. And pregnant.

Meeting the extraordinary honorees was an experience I will never forget.

But my favorite part of the evening was realizing how blessed I am to work for this company.

Mostly because of my coworkers and superiors.

I adore the people I work with every day.

Caitlin, Nicole, Steve, Kim and Larry.

My boss Kimberly Porrazzo is the most incredible mentor.

I look up to her like a second Mom.

She is an incredible leader, journalist and most importantly wife and mother.

I have moved into a new role at OC Metro in preparation for my new role as a Mom.

I am now focusing solely on the OC Metro Minute.

It has been a strange change as I spend less time at the office.

But I know it is the right thing

and am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity with the video position.

Now, OC Metro editors are looking for the top local CPA's for our January issue.

Flaws...

On Sunday James and I went on a nice walk around the Backbay.

It was a simple Sunday activity - I snapped pictures and James worked on perfecting my spiral throw.

The scenery was beautiful and the weather was perfect

but I quickly found myself babbling on about our picture perfect life...in the future.

You know, wanting one of those pretty houses -

our future jobs, kids, residence etc. etc.
As if I have it so rough.

James argued back here and there but mostly remained quiet.

And then suddenly he just looked at me calmly and simply and said,

"I just hope you are happy with your life now."

Although his words were few, it seemed like many as they repeatedly flash in my mind.

Uncharacteristically, I looked at him and thought - you are absolutely right!

From the time I was a little girl I have always been seeking for the next step.

Sure, it helps you reach your goals and push yourself further.

But when it comes to my personal life,

I seem to look to the next moment rather than enjoying the here and now.

I was embarrassed and ashamed of my "I want" attitude.

Its funny, after spending every free waking hour with your spouse

you sure do know each other well.

And yet, I still get embarrassed when my flaws are exposed.

Just a few moments later James was praising my oh so simple dinner

And that is another subtle beauty of marriage.

Forgive and forget.

Boy am I grateful for that one.

Fall Faire...

On Saturday, our ward held its annual Fall Faire.

I did the publicity for the event and was really excited to see how it all came together.

I had no idea it was going to be such a big deal.

The Newport Beach 1st Ward certainly goes all out for this one.

I made a delicious chili for the cook off, based on a recipe from a friend.

It was my first cook off and I was admittedly overly excited about the whole thing.

The cub scouts had a darling fundraiser with some delicious turkey cupcakes.

The kids activities looked so fun and I was bummed I couldn't join in.

Jen made an incredible pumpkin cake.

I am still admiring it.

There was a stick pull contest that was hilarious and a pie eating competition.

Our new missionary in the ward won.

It was classic.

I also ended up making Your Homebased Mom's White Almond Sheet Cake.

And ended up bringing most of it home.

There are always too many desserts.

And lucky me, I took home the award for "Most Unique Chili."

It was actually a three way tie

but somehow I ended up with the ladle.

I guess that is what happens when you put zucchini in your chili.

After the party we came home and snuggled up on the couch to watch a movie.

The weather here has been perfectly fallish

and I loved curling up on the couch with my main squeeze.

And despite that face, I can guarantee you he loved it too.

Life in the Making: 15 Weeks Pregnant

I think it is time I start documenting this little life in the making.

I am now longing for a record of my own Mom's pregnancy

and find myself constantly asking her how she felt at this point.

Hopefully our little peanut will cherish this one day.

I can hardly believe that I am now into my second trimester and things are trucking along.

Obviously I don't have much of a bump.

Just a little tiny one.

But we are starting to see little changes and can't wait till I start popping out.

I threw up at least once or twice a day my entire first trimester.

My doctor kept asking if I wanted to take meds -

but I knew I could get through it without.

Yes, it was rough.

But strangely there was something magical about it.

Call me crazy, but I absolutely loved having a sign that I was pregnant.

It was a daily {sometimes hourly} reminder that my life is changing.

This is no longer just about me and James.

Something about having a little poppyseed make you feel so queazy is exciting.

In addition to the queasiness - I was feeling terribly tired.

Around 9 weeks they discovered that I am extremely anemic.

This wasn't shocking to me as I have been border line anemic my whole life.

My vitamins were all making me throw up on the spot -

so my doctor said to just make it through the first trimester and then get back to them.

I am just starting to take iron supplements to combat the anemia.

At 11 weeks we had an ultrasound.

James was able to come and I was thrilled.

Since he won't be to most of my appointments from here on out I was glad he saw the ultrasound.

Seeing is always better than hearing, if you ask me.

At 12 weeks I got to hear the heart beat.

That was exciting, although all too short.

Cravings.

So far I haven't had too many cravings - just food aversions.

Most of my family is now eating a plant based/vegan lifestyle.

At first I had mixed feelings about it.

Then, I was really frustrated because I wanted to be joining in

but the thought of eating some of those things made me queazy.

For a while all I wanted was cheese.

And I let myself.

Now, I am just trying to do my best.

Eat more veggies. Less meat and animal products etc.

And I feel great about my improvements.

When I was sick and not wanting to cook we visited Cafe Rio more than I am willing to admit.

I also drank a lot of Diet Coke to help with nausea.

My doctor said DC was ok instead of Sprite, to avoid the sugar.

It also helped me get through my 6:30 a.m. work schedule.

The only craving I have really had is sour candy -

specifically Sour Patch Kids.

I almost made James go get me some in the middle of the night once.

Almost.

And then two weeks ago - the nausea just stopped.

I was throwing up constantly one day and the next - nothing.

And just like that - this little baby is already growing up.

We are eating much healthier and I am loving being able to cook again.

I am going to Dr. Clayton.

A lot of the girls here highly recommended him.

His office is just blocks from our house and right across from the hospital where we will deliver.

Our hospital overlooks Balboa

and we will supposedly have an ocean view from our room.

Seems normal to everyone here - but we think we are rather spoiled.

We love our doctor.

He is very thorough and just calming.

He delivers about 80 percent of his patients babies so we are hoping he will deliver ours.

We had our 15 week appointment yesterday.

James had a CPA study day on Friday so I changed my appointment so he could come.

Everything checked out just great.

Still anemic, but thats ok.

No weight gain so far - but the doctor says to expect a five to ten pound gain in the next little bit.

At first I was really nervous about the weight part.

But my doctor keeps reminding me its natural and good.

And he's right.

The little one is 4.5 inches long now and weighs about 2 or 3 ounces.

I was happy James was able to hear the heartbeat.

And lets just say - he's been drumming the beat on his dashboard ever since.

We are supposed to find out what we are having the week of Thanksgiving -

but we will be in St. George.

We are bummed about that but are excited to find out the week after.

We think we want to wait till Christmas to tell our families what it is.

We will see if we last.

After our appointment we went down and sat on a lifeguard stand.

A storm was rolling out and we were the only ones in sight.

It was the perfect day.

We talked about our life changing and how excited we are to be expanding our little family.

The last couple of weeks I have found myself thinking a lot

about adoption that has taken place in my family.

How amazing it is that no matter what the route, little ones are placed in the right family.

Its been humbling for me to realize that this pregnancy really isn't about me.

It's just a way of transportation.

No matter what,

he or she was going to find a way to us

because we agreed to be together forever a long, long time ago.

This little baby is meant to come to our home and specifically to our family.

We can hardly wait to meet this little person.

Beach Pit...

In our neighborhood there is a little beach BBQ place called the Beach Pit.

I had passed it several times and wanted to give it a shot -

so I was thrilled when the ladies in our ward found a coupon and decided to make a play date out of it.

I was the only one without a munchkin but I soaked up every second.

And every bite.

I have been really missing Guru's sweet potato fries -

and the Beach Pitt has some serious competitors.

How lucky am I to be in such a fun ward?

7 ladies + 11 kids + some fabulous food = the perfect afternoon.

Summer in October...

Its been six months since the last time I saw my parents.

Call it growing up, call it moving away, call it good for me -

I still miss my family!

So, my parents decided to come visit for my Dad's 35th Birthday.

{You're welcome Dad}

I was over the moon excited.

It was a relaxing weekend full of beach time and touring our new home.

They picked the perfect weekend to come.

It was literally summer in October.

We were all wishing we were in our suits on the beach.

Several members of my family are now eating a plant based diet.

My parents were thrilled to be in an area that caters to their eating style.

The healthy lifestyle here is one my favorite things about this place.

We took my Dad to our usual spot, True Food, for his birthday dinner.

My Mom has a rather lengthy list of food requirements

some of which she has cursed/blessed me with.

True Food seems to meet most of those requirements

so it has become my go to place when I have to eat out.

And James can get a hearty Bison burger.

Win win.

We had the most delicious apple crisp dessert for my Dad's birthday treat

and it was all on the "Ann approved list."

Bonus!

I can't get over how good my Dad looks!

The man acts half his age.

Lookin' good Daddy-o.

The boys topped the night off with game 7 of the world series.

I love nothing more than having my two favorite men on the same couch at once.

They love watching sports together and its just about the only time I thoroughly enjoy the game myself.

The next morning we woke up and walked to Starbucks for a little Soy Pumpkin Steamer.

{Although James opted for a Hot Cocoa instead}

If you haven't had one do yourself a favor and walk -

no RUN to the nearest Starbucks.

They are to die for

and the perfect way for me to get my fall fix during the summer in October.

We showed my parents Pelican Hill, Balboa, Corona Del Mar etc. on our way to our next stop...

a picnic lunch at Salt Creek Beach.

We had a lovely picnic here with our friends Shelby and Ryan and had to take my parents.

We love eating on the grass and then enjoying a walk on the sand.

It also happened to be a surf competition,

which was an added perk.

James gets restless after about 4 minutes of a picnic.

I forgot to bring him a frisbee or a ball.

So, he used his apple.

We all took turns playing catch with James and his apple.

Lets just say its time for us to have a kid for more reasons than one.

We finished the evening with a little Banzai Bowl in Laguna and then walked around the shops.

I have discovered the most incredible home decor spot, Tuvalu.

Ok, it didn't take much discovering.

It is on the main drag BUT I am still quite proud of my find.

I take every one there and want every thing inside.

This weeks find...

As much as I love me some red and green at Christmas -

I might just need these.

It's a need. Not a want.

We headed to the Irvine Spectrum to walk around and watch Moneyball.

My boss' son just happens to be in the movie so I was especially excited to see it.

Definitely a must see.

This girl was sure sad to see these two go.

We have big plans for their next adventure to Newport.

And can't wait for Thanksgiving in St. George.

No matter how old I get there is still a need for a little time with my good ol' Mom and Dad.

My sweet friend Mercedes and I decided to throw a little bash for Halloween.

Our ward is full of kiddos so we decided it would be best to have an open house

where everyone could stop by for some hearty and sweet eats while out trick or treating.

On Monday, Mercedes and I ran errands with little babe Vera all day.

From the costume shop on Balboa Peninsula, to Ikea and Beach Pitt for sweet potato fries

we covered some serious territory.

With just a few hours to spare we went home to set up for our spooktacular.

I must admit, Halloween was by far my most favorite night we have had in Newport.

When James and I found this neighborhood back in April we just knew we had to be here.

We weren't sure why -

but we just knew.

And now it is all so clear.

In just 6 short months this place has become home because of these people.

Nothing solidified it more than my first big holiday in our new home.

I didn't bat an eye.

I was thrilled to be here

and was even more excited that we had wonderful friends to attend the annual Halloween Barker Bash.

Riding in on her broom to celebrate her 88th birthday,

my sweet Grandma Ora showed a bit of sass at a luncheon given in her honor today.

Her sweet friend Fae Evans hosted the event with a group of her close friends.

Little did they know who the birthday girl would really turn out to be!

Oh how I wish I could have joined my Mom and Grandma for the celebrations.

I have had a few people ask where my rather insane obsession for holiday's came from...

Turns out it's genetic!

And boy oh boy am I glad I inherited this stunning lady's genes.

Tanaka Farms

After 4 years of complaining about the snow -

I am officially complaining about not having seasons.

When will the grass not be greener on the other side?

I need to get better at this.
So, I have decided to embrace the ocean fog that has set in as my new fall season

and roll with it.

It seems my new attitude is suiting me well.

Yesterday, I begged {basically on hands and knees} James to take me to a local pumpkin patch.

We had a 20 minute break in our day and he {grudgingly} obliged.

Welcome to Tanaka Farms - also known as Strawberry Farms in Irvine.

Ive been wanting to check this place out since we moved.

They offer fresh veggie picking YEAR ROUND for 2.99 lb {pricey - but fresh}

and also have a weekly farmers market pick up.

One of the many perks of living in Southern California.

I was thrilled to check it all out along with the seasonal pumpkin patch.

James was essentially giving me a countdown the entire time we were there.

Nevertheless, I raced through the pumpkin patch while he counted off my remaining minutes.

I know deep down he just loves when I make him do these things.

We discovered two perfect pumpkins.

And I paid James to take a picture with his.

{Ok, not really, but practically}

During our first year of marriage I gave James a really hard time

for not loving my girly holiday outings.

And I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I guilted him just a little yesterday.

However, I am learning that James doesn't have to skip through the pumpkin patch with me.

Walking with a half smile will do.

Obviously this isn't his cup of tea.

And football isn't mine.

But somehow we are coming to appreciate just joining in.

And so it was.

The pumpkin patch was a thriller for me - and got the job done for James.

Next stop, Wood Ranch at the Irvine Spectrum.

We met up with two darling couples from our ward with two even more darling baby girls.

We were in heaven.

Dinner at a new restaurant with 6 of our favorite people.

After dinner we strolled around the mall.

I am coming to love the atmosphere at this place at night.

They had a mariachi band playing, people were dancing

and it seemed as if the whole town was there for the night.

Turns out, fall without orange leaves isn't so bad after all.

While Allison was here we decided to have a little pre Halloween bash.

I love that my sisters-in-law enjoy throwing a party as much as I do.

We decided to have an orange themed bash.

I scoured Orange County for bread bowls that look like pumpkins.

They have them at the Maceys in Provo.

I could not find them anywhere here.

So, I tried my hand at homemaking them.

They were so hideous that I refuse to post the picture.

Fail. Big time fail.

We did, however, devour my chili.

Katie made a delicious orange salad.

And Allie brought some adorable and tasty treats.

The man of the hour had pumpkin feeties and a pumpkin bum.

He is a festive little munchkin already!

It was the perfect way to kick off the holiday season!

The First Ultrasound...

I only have one more week left in my first trimester.

Some days I feel like time is whirling past me

and others I feel like its crawling.

But mostly, I am loving every second and cant wait to meet our little one.

We decided to have an early ultrasound at nine weeks.

After we decided I had a tiny.tiny.tiny bit of spotting.

I was so glad we had the ultrasound the next day to ease my nerves and tears.

James even came over on his lunch break.

I must admit,

when the ultrasound tech zoomed in on our little bean it was like the world stood still.

I was teary eyed and James was in shock.

If there was ever love at first sight - this was most certainly it!

{Even if he/she looks a wee bit like an alien.}

According to the tech, everything looked great.

In fact, the little one was moving all over the place

and the ultrasound tech said our baby is thriving.

Naturally, James is telling every one that our little peach is a “champ” already.

Shrek the Musical...

Thanks to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts,

I was able to attend Shrek the Musical.

I brought along my good friend Candi Queathem.

I was thrilled to have a night out on the town with her,

filled with a little DC, M&Ms and good convo.

Candi and I met in the broadcast program at BYU

and wound up following our husbands to Southern California.

I am sure glad I have her here.

I dont think either of us stopped smiling and laughing the whole show.

I must admit, I didnt expect this to be a knock out show.

But as soon as it was over Candi leaned over and asked

if it would be absurd to say Shrek was as good as Wicked.

While the story line isnt anything to write home about -

the show was incredibly entertaining.

It was hysterical.

The talent was amazing.

And the costumes were to die for.

Every childhood character was brought to life.

I cant stop thinking about it.

Excellent show.

Aunt Allie...

Allison came to visit this last weekend.

Despite the fact that she came to divulge in this little bundle of joy,

we were thrilled to have her.

The Story...

Welp, its true.

I am pregnant.

And we are feeling so very blessed.

I use the word blessed like it is going out of style.

But I don't know how else to describe it.

From the time I was a little girl I have watched my family members yearn for children -

many times facing trials that I will never be able to understand.

They have helped me value motherhood and pregnancy.

It is beautiful.

It is a miracle.

And it is something that does not come easily to many people.

I have often found myself wondering, why?

Why was I able to have this happen while many of my friends and family have not?

Which is why I have promised myself to enjoy every. single. moment.

The good and the bad -

I will take it all because I know so many would do anything to have the bad in order to have the good.

After watching so many struggle I just knew...

I had that gut feeling...

it was going to take me 6 months to a year to get pregnant.

So, James and I started earnestly praying when the right time was for us.

I have never prayed so earnestly about something.

Nor have I ever gotten such a strong answer.

It was time to start trying.

And we both knew it - and we knew it for sure.

{Due date: April 27, 2012}

As evidenced in this picture -

We couldn't really believe our eyes.

Again, why were we so blessed?

The first line was so faint - I simply disregarded it.

But when James got home and looked at the test he doubtfully exclaimed that there were two lines.

I was certain that it was only because it had been sitting under our light.

So, I took the second test.

Still a faint line.

We decided to wait a few days before we believed it.

But I just couldn't wait.

So the next day I went and bought the second box of tests.

I took BOTH tests.

I texted James the pictures.

It was starting to become more real.

I called my Mom - could this really be happening so quickly?

I swore her to secrecy.
I wanted to surprise her along with the rest of the family -
but I didn't know what to do at this point and needed advice.

She suggested I wait a few more days and take another test to be certain.

None of us believed it.

A few days later I took a digital test and saw the word PREGNANT pop up.

Now it was for real.

And from that moment on we have been absolutely

enamored with the little munchkin inside.

For now we are enjoying nights in and making this place home.

James' Mom was here for three weeks to help with Baby Carter.

She stayed with us for 10 days and we loved having her.

We enjoyed a first week birthday celebration for the little one, lots of family time and tasty food.

It was her birthday while she was here so we had a little birthday dinner at our house.

We all, including the fam in Virginia via Google +, sang her Happy Birthday.

James' Dad wants the grandbabes to call him Poppy.

But we all worry they may call him Poopy.

So he made a post it to make the point.

It was a classic Jim Barker moment.

We were sad to see Ann go, but happy to have Jim come in just a few days later.

We had a little Sunday brunch at our apartment.

We are loving eating out on our patio these days.

The weather is just too beautiful to be true.

A few weeks ago I volunteered to make a new family in our ward dinner.

I hadn't met them -

so when I was texted Mercedes name I nearly fell off my chair.

A few years ago we met and were Facebook/pinterest friends.

I had just seen various things from her over the last few years but really didnt know her at all.

Needless to say, we hit it right off and just adore her and Aaron....

and perhaps more importantly their little baby girl Vera.

Last weekend we decided to have a craft night and make the boys watch Vera.

We had chili and pumpkin muffins and made fall wreaths.

It was so fun to see Aaron with the babe -

and watch attempt to handle her during a little cry.

We both have a lot to work on.

Coronado Island

For our one year anniversary James and I packed our bags and headed to Coronado Island.

Neither of us had stayed on the island and after our first tax deadline

{yes, I include myself in the mix}

we were both ready for some time off and a little getaway.

We took off Friday afternoon and made the stunning drive to San Diego and Coronado.

The second we crossed that bridge we were in heaven.

One of my favorite things to do with James is recall how far we have come.

We spent the drive going over the last year of our lives and what we have done.

We covered everything from holiday celebrations -

down to the little disagreements we have overcome.

It was hysterical and loving all in one.

Friday was a bit gloomy so we made our first stop at Hotel Del to check out the historical monument.

I still cant get over that hotel.

We enjoyed some $14 ice cream from Mootime.

Worth every bite - and dollar if I may say so myself.

Saturday morning we slept in, sipped hot cocoa in our nice hotel room

and stopped at a small diner for breakfast.

Coronado is nothing short of charming...

But I must say that I think we spent the entire trip eating because it was rather gloomy.

If the sun doesn't shine we don't really know what to do with ourselves.

Luckily, the sun came out in the nick of time.

We wandered around a local art festival on the edge of the island

and wandered around looking at homes.

As soon as the sun started to shine we raced back to the hotel to lounge by the pool

and catch up on trashy magazines

{ok that was just me}.

James still has no idea I stole this picture of him sporting my hat for about point two seconds.

I think he has some serious swagger.

That night we headed down town San Diego to a restaurant some friends had highly recommended.

Our neighbors are real foodies and they said it was their all time favorite restaurant.

If there is one thing my husband excels at its taking me out on a nice night out on the town.

I wont hide the fact that its probably the first way he won my heart.

Seersucker was hands down the best dinner I have ever had.

When we told them it was our anniversary but we don't drink -

the bartender whipped up this divine apple drink.

{after they got over the shock of us not drinking any form of alcohol}

I cant even remember how many courses we had.

And I will spare you the details on how sick I was after this meal.

But boy was it fun.

It was one of those nights where I could have sat and talked with James for hours.

I felt like we were dating all over again.

We both agreed that the Lamp District was well worth the visit.

We loved wandering the stores and the whole night life atmosphere.

On Sunday morning James and I woke up to our last day of vaca.

We decided to make the very most of it.

I must admit -

forcing James to have a massage on our honeymoon

was one of the best decisions I have made in marriage.

It was torture getting him to go with me - but now that I did....

He is sold!

So Sunday we found a little whole in the wall spa -

and had a massage.

It was fabulous.

And then he went right back to checking football scores.

We wrapped our weekend up back at Hotel Del.

Lunch on the patio and walking barefoot in the sand.

It was the perfect end to our romantic getaway.

Truly, I wouldn't choose to be anywhere else in the world than walking along the beach with this man.

James' sister Katie and her husband Vonn welcomed handsome Carter into this world just a few short weeks ago.

We are lucky enough to live just a few miles away.

We are simply head over heels in love with this little guy.

Congrats Katie and Vonn.

Sunflowers and Sunshine

After a couple of months, James and I finally feel like we are creating some roots here.

On Labor Day we had a few couples over from our ward...

and it felt like a home.

Planning a little get together, good food, great friends.

I started work just as summer was beginning...

so it felt like I never got a real summer.

{Welcome to real life, eh?}

So, I am not complaining that the season lasts just a bit longer here in Newport Beach.

Mostly, I am not complaining about having many, many more get togethers with this group.

It all seems to be coming full circle,

I think we were meant to live in this area because of the people.

We sure are blessed.

One Year...

On Sunday James and I celebrated our one year anniversary.

The weeks just seem to be wizzing by us and I could hardly believe it was here.

One year.

Surely that puts us in a whole new category.

As my mind went over the various events of that day

(that feels like yesterday)

a wave of emotions came over me.

As cliche as it sounds...it was the best day of my life.

Not because of the pretty dress, the flying bouquet or the details I worked so hard to perfect...

but because of the life we were starting.

Within a week the wedding hoopalah would all be over and we were left as an ordinary Mr. and Mrs.

Growing up you dream of the prince and princess moment

but you dont realize that the ordinary part is actually far better than the party.

If you survive the first year, you can survive anything -

or so they say.

But I must admit...

the first year of marriage was far easier than expected.

Sure, we have our moments.

But as time slips past us

it seems as if we are starting to get the hang of the whole his and hers bit.

James has gotten really good at listening - just to listen - not to solve.

And I can now watch an hour of football without a laptop in hand.

To put it in his terms -

Id say we just got a first down!

To my main man,

I love you more with every day.

You still make me crack up every day

and I hope it never stops.

You spoil me rotten in the smallest of ways -

and the biggest of ways.

You are still sweeping me off of my feet and I am certainly not complaining.

Here is to a lifetime of anniversaries.

Love you with all of my heart.

A Swell Weekend

Labor day weekend was swell...

in every sense of the word.

Newport Beach had massive swells.

Part of the peninsula even flooded.

Hundreds of people turned out to see the surfers brave the waves.

There was something so calming about those huge waves hitting the sand.

Everyone was silent -

just watching the waves crash.

And then...

as fast as the swell came -

it was gone.

Like nothing ever happened.

The ocean will never cease to amaze me.

We spent some time with a Dani Bree and Daron Young who were in town

and had a blast talking the night away.

James declared this as his favorite new do.

The three greatest things about James...

He likes my hair on top of my head - no makeup - and flats.

Now that is swell!

We had the most wonderful dinner at our bishops home on Lido Island.

We adore our bishop and new ward family.

They are warm and welcoming and wonderful.

One of the many reasons why I love the church...

no matter where I go I know I will find a home and rent-a-family.

As soon as we walked into our bishops home I noted the large room filled to the brim with boxes.

Our bishops wife then declared how she LOVES holidays.

I then declared how I LOVE holidays...

and therefore LOVE her.

We talked scarecrows, St. Patricks green pancakes and Christmas.

It was swell.

And then we drove off their little island to this...

I have to admit something.

I never thought I would say this -

but for the past few weeks I have been deeply worried

that I would miss the seasons in northern Utah.

{gasp}

As much as I complained -

there is something glorious about fall leaves and {some} snow.

BUT as we drove off the island on Sunday night I realized there are seasons here...

I just have to look for them.

An orange sky and fog in the mornings.

This is new.

This is a change.

And fall is coming.

And that is swell.

Wet n Wild

Last weekend James and I ran in a 5K with his firm at a local water park.

When James asked if I wanted to run -

I didn't even hesitate.

I probably should have thought about the fact that lately I have been into Yoga and Spinning...

NOT running.

Needless to say -

I came in DEAD last from the group.

Yes, even after the people with the double stroller.

{Pathetic}

Here we are...

running through the lazy river.

Such a blast.

After spending an hour or two with this crew...

I will continue my previous statement.

I had NO idea accountants were this fun

{besides my own of course}

How we love Saturdays together.

We both had fun church events Saturday morning.

I even got to help with a bridal shower.

{Heaven.on.earth.}

Followed by a few hours at the beach with friends

and dinner with new neighbors who we adore.

Its back to school time around Newport.

Which means wide open beaches.

Less traffic.

And plenty of sunshine to go around.

We hear September and October is when the locals really dig their toes in the sand.

We are still working on our local status...

so I guess thats our queue.

Wednesday Wisdom...

Hands down one of my favorite posts from my Grandma.

I am homesick for her and her back rubs and kind words.

Certainly glad she is willing to share a piece of her memories each week.

I am mostly glad my children will have these notes from their Great Grandmother.

And don't we all miss the days of back packs and the first day of school?

With many schools beginning a new year this week,

my mind wanders back to my first day of school.

Back in the Olden Days!!!

I look at pictures of my great-grand children's first day of school,

with their neat back packs, pretty hip clothes, new shoes, etc.

We had no access to cameras then, cell phones, iPads, or any of the wonderful high tech capabilities.

They hadn't even been thought of, or dreamed of, so we missed out by not having a record of our important events like families do now.

As Karly says "it’s a wonderful world."

But I can paint a picture in words, if you have the imagination to get it.

We had no kindergarten or pre-school then,

so we started right off in the big time 1st grade.

I was so excited for this huge event, and even had new clothes and a new pencil!

My father walked the five blocks with me to sign me up and introduce me to my teacher.

As he talked to my pretty teacher,

I could see his proud sweet face change into a sad frown.

The teacher called the principal in and the three of them talked,

with me not knowing what was going on,

but I could tell we had trouble.

My Dad took my hand and walked me out of the school.

On the way home he tried to explain what had happened

and why I couldn't stay at school with all the other happy, excited children.

Again, in those days we didn't have all the rules in place like pre-registration,

meet the teacher night, desk assignments and so on.

I was so hurt and mortified that I didn't quite grasp the meaning of the whole tragic thing.

You see, my birthday is October 28th,

so we were told I had to wait until the next year to enter school.

I hardly dared to face my friends because it seemed as if I had done something wrong,

didn't understand how to get into school

, or something else that escaped my little young mind.

It took some time for me to get over this disaster in my life,

but like most busy and fun loving children, I found other ways to learn.

I still had all those free days to roam around the creek and build an Indian wikkie-up.

My Dad and Mom helped me learn to read and learn my numbers,

so I was prepared well for the next year.

I often feel so grateful for the wonderful, safe and free life of my childhood.

If I had lived in the city, with its restrictions unlike I was used to,

I may have had a hard time--but I didn't and life went on.

I wonder which era is the best.

In the big scheme of life, I think both are the best for the time frame you live in.

Friday night date.

James texted me Friday afternoon and told me to be ready for a date at 6:30.

He was taking me out.

We road our cruisers down to the peninsula to the old Lido Regency theater.

In true Barker man fashion we were plenty early.

But I loved getting to watch the old crackly commercials

and the old far away from the screen style seating.

A simple, yet absolutely wonderful, night out on the town.

What a wonderful world...

Today has been one of those days where I cant help but think how very blessed I am.

A year and a half ago I met beautiful Erika through the blogging world.

Erika lives in the Ukraine - near the boarder of Hungary.

She lives in a small town that she has called negative and depressed

because of the political and economic problems.

In a country where few people know or believe in God,

Erika has extraordinary faith in God and Jesus Christ.

She has served 7 missions for her faith,

teaching young children about the Bible and God.

Most of her familys food comes from their own garden and local goods.

As hard as this young woman works to support her family she still finds time to serve.

This afternoon, after nearly a year and a half of talking back and forth,

we talked on Skype.

I was able to meet her family and she was able to meet James.

She is extremely interested in our beliefs

and hopes that she can one day attend church despite the traveling distance.

What an inspiration she is!

After James and I hung up the phone we both commented

how smart and ambitious Erika is despite her challenging circumstances.

She is a go getter.

She speaks three languages.

In a place where having faith is not the norm -

Erika not only has faith, but is teaching it to others.

In a place where few people are happy -

Erika always has a smile on her face.

What a blessing she is in our life.

And what a blessing technology is.

It was another reminder that I need to reach out to the authors of the dozens

{ok, maybe hundreds}

of blogs that I read.

So many of us use our blogs as journals and scrapbooks.

But I will be the first to admit that I also find joy in reading about other peoples lives.

And I am nearly certain that most bloggers read blogs.

What a shame it is that I am too afraid or embarrassed to simply say thank you for uplifting me by sharing your life.

While there are a few horrific people out there who will criticize and perhaps even harm bloggers -

I believe in my heart of hearts that there are even more

- far more -

wonderful people who together can do a lot of good.

One day, James and I hope to meet Erika in person.

This Sunday I am thankful for Erika.
I am thankful for technology.

I am thankful that a year and a half ago she sent me an email and told me her story.

I am thankful for a husband who has shown me exactly where Erika lives

and made it possible for us to understand her a little bit more.

I am grateful for families.

And I am thankful for the gospel which gives me light in my life.

What a wonderful world we live in.
